Prof. Dr. Orth Research Examining Package Design Earns Prestigious Award. Prof. Dr. Orth, was presented with the "William H. Darden Award" for the paper with the best research methodology at the annual conference of the Academy of Marketing Science in Coral Gables, FL. Co- author of the research is Keven Malkewitz, assistant professor of Marketing at Oregon State University in Corvallis, USA. Seven studies identify key types of package designs including the factors differentiating those package designs, and determine how these holistic designs relate to consumer brand impressions. Results indicate five holistic designs based on generalizable design factors which in turn are formed from design elements. Across two product categories ( wine and fragrances), Massive designs are associated with low impressions of sophistication and average sincerity, Contrasting designs generate impressions of excitement and ruggedness but low competence, Natural designs convey impressions sincerity and sophistication; Delicate designs score high on competence and sophistication, and Non-descript designs score low on sincerity, excitement, and ruggedness. Conclusions focus on how holistic designs and generic design factors can be utilized in package design decisions to stimulate desired consumer responses.
